How these full-time RVers keep life on the road running smoothly

Jason and Julie Roberts didn’t wait for retirement to chase their dream—they hit the road when the world shifted in 2020. With remote work suddenly possible and a fresh perspective on life’s unpredictability, the couple traded in their sticks-and-bricks life for full-time RVing, choosing spontaneity, flexibility, and intentional living. They now chase adventures in their Grand Design Momentum 351M, making every destination feel like home.
We had a chat with Jason and Julie about what it’s really like to live full-time in an RV: the challenges, the surprises, and the daily routines behind the Instagram-worthy views. From letting go of sentimental belongings to navigating maintenance headaches, they offered us an honest glimpse into life on the road—and how this lifestyle has brought more friendships, freedom, and fulfillment than they ever imagined.
What inspired you to start full-time RVing?
We always planned to become full-time RVers when we retired. However Jason realized that his Dad always spoke about what he would do when he retired, but unfortunately he never made it to retirement. When Covid hit and the opportunity to work remotely came about, we jumped on the idea to do it now and stop waiting for retirement.

What was the hardest part about letting go of your house and most of your belongings?
Jason had no issue getting rid of anything. For Julie, it was hard to get rid of sentimental family items however she learned that a picture of the item gives you the same feelings as the actual item. She also found other family members that would love the heirlooms as much as she did.
Why did you choose the Grand Design Momentum 351M as your home on wheels?
We chose the Grand Design Momentum 351M as our home on wheels for its perfect mix of luxury, versatility, and functionality. The 351M features a spacious layout with a front master bedroom, an 11-foot garage that we convert into office workspace, and residential comforts like a kitchen island, sofa, large refrigerator, 4 burner stove with oven, and fireplace. Its off-grid capabilities, including a generator, and quality construction with a wide-body design and heated tanks, ensure comfort and durability in various conditions.

How long did it take to adjust to life on the road?
Having spent many years RVing part-time, we were already familiar with the ins and outs of RV life, from navigating campground setups to handling RV maintenance and logistics. This background allowed us to transition to the full-time RV lifestyle with ease within a few weeks. We literally turned our passion for travel into our way of life.
What does a typical day look like for you now?
It might surprise people—we both work remote jobs so it looks a lot like the daily routine of anyone who works full-time. Mornings often begin with coffee and catching up on emails or planning the tasks for the day. Evenings are for unwinding, cooking dinner, and relaxing, just like anyone else—except our "office" view changes regularly with every new destination. Weekends are generally spent seeing new things in the area we are staying in.
How do you decide where to go next?
The decision on where to go is sometimes based on weather, and other times based on rallies we would like to attend or things we want to see. We also make plans to visit with friends or family.
Have you faced any major challenges or breakdowns on the road?
We have faced a couple of challenging periods when our RV needed to be repainted, leaving us without our home for 11 weeks. In addition to the repainting, we dealt with frame flex repairs, which required us to stay in a hotel for 2 weeks. While this tested our adaptability, we used the time to plan future travels and reflect on the resilience needed for life on the road.
How do you handle mail, banking, and other logistics while full-timing?
We use St Brendans Isle for our mail service. For any mail received they will scan the cover of the envelope and give us the option to forward it or open it and scan the contents and email it to us. We have done that for a few years now and it’s been great. For banking we use banks that have locations all over the US, however we can’t remember the last time we actually visited a bank. We do all of our Dr visits in Florida where we bounce around for the winter. If a health issue comes up while we are on the road then we would just pick a local walk-in clinic that accepts our insurance.

What surprised you most about full-time RV living?
The amount of friends we have made all over the US! We have always been social but are amazed that we have more friends now, then we ever did living in a traditional home.
Do you ever miss having a stationary home? Why or why not?
Neither one of us misses having a house. Too much to clean and who really needs all that stuff. Julie misses the boat and being on the water while camping, however having the ability to rent a boat or go on a friend's boat has helped. Jason misses having the workshop to tinker with stuff. He loved fixing things but fortunately with RV life we always have something to fix!
Is there anything else you would like to add?
If you are thinking of this lifestyle then try it. Rent an RV for a week and see if you could really live in one. At some point you will realize what we do—that experiences are way better than things. Exploring this beautiful country has been a dream come true for us. We just started our 5th year of being fulltime RVers and have no plans to stop. We have made so many memories already, but know there is so much more to see!
