Get to know Campbell River's flora and fauna
Campbell River, B.C., is surrounded by wildlife, and visitors can get up close and personal with a variety of majestic creatures. There are companies offering tours that go above and beyond your average wildlife-viewing excursion.
One of the most popular choices is orca whale-watching. Head off on a boat with an experienced guide and see the marine wildlife that Campbell River is known for. In addition to the orcas, you may also get to see dolphins, porpoises, seals, sea lions, humpback whales and others.
If you prefer to stay on land, consider taking a grizzly bear tour. Your guide will take you on an adventure, allowing you to see the grizzlies in their natural habitat from a safe, secure location. Some of the tours run for a full day and include lunch.
Take a trip to Black Creek
Located approximately 20 kilometres from Campbell River, Black Creek provides gorgeous scenery and photo opportunities. Known as a quiet agricultural community, this peaceful hamlet is beloved by bird watchers, who visit the nearby Woodhus Slough. Here you can find rare plants, and nearly 200 species of birds, including the elusive Virginia Rail and Sora species, song sparrows, American goldfinches, Brewer's blackbirds, house finches, blue herons and others. Also keep your eyes peeled for beavers, muskrats, and Pacific tree frogs. In winter time, you can even see Trumpeter swans.
