Home to two of the world’s two largest dark sky preserves, Wood Buffalo and Jasper National Parks, Alberta offers prime viewing of the northern lights.

Step away from the cities and you’ll find impromptu opportunities all over the province, particularly the further north you go.

Canada’s first ‘dark sky’ community is Bon Accord, Alberta. This small town 40 km (25 miles) north of Edmonton is only the 11th town in the world to receive this distinction.

  • Experiences that best showcase Alberta’s sparkling night sky include:
  • Starlit snowshoe jaunts and full-moon fondue tours with Kananaskis Outfitters.
  • Strapping on cleats and exploring icy Johnston Canyon by moonlight.
  • Stargazing tours with astronomers, plus nighttime photography workshops during Jasper’s Dark Sky Festival.
  • Both Edmonton and Calgary boast dome-shaped Planetarium theatres for interactive indoor star gazing.
