Victoria, ideally situated on Vancouver Island’s southern tip, is one of the best places to take a whale-watching tour. There are several pods of whales found along the eastern and western coasts of the Island, both of which are accessible from Victoria by joining a tour with a local guiding company.

The whale-watching tours available in Victoria will introduce visitors to the different personalities and habits of the nearby orca pods. There appear to be two kinds of killer whales (orcas) in the world: resident orcas are fish-eaters only, whereas transient pods are mammal-eaters. Vancouver Island’s coast is home to both resident and transient killer whales.

Gray whales arrive every spring in the waters around Vancouver Island on their migration to the Arctic Ocean. As they are known to be one of the friendliest of the whale species, if a group of whales is spotted, there a good chance of seeing one of these creatures up close—especially because it seems the gentle giants want to see you up close, too.
