VANCOUVER ISLAND, B.C.
Island in the stream
Visitors to Vancouver Island will find themselves in an ocean paradise
Communities on British Columbia’s Vancouver Island have earned a reputation as being great places to enjoy active relaxation. Diving, fishing, hiking and golfing are just a few of the ways in which RVers can spend their days. With the Pacific Ocean presenting an aquatic playground and the rest of Vancouver Island easily accessible via major thoroughfares, Campbell River and Nanaimo make excellent jumping-off points to other great spots for intrepid Island travellers.

Nanaimo: the harbour city
Nanaimo is the city in the centre of it all and offers lots of amenities and activities for visitors. Providing connections to highway routes to the rest of Vancouver Island as well as ferry routes to the neighbouring Gulf Islands and Sunshine Coast, Nanaimo serves as a convenient home base for RVers with its numerous nearby campsites.
Divers will enjoy the four submerged ships that have created artificial reefs in the depths around Nanaimo’s harbour, while anglers can look forward to a saltwater bounty of salmon, cod, crab and shrimp. And golfers have no excuse not to improve their game, as both 18-hole and nine-hole courses abound in the area.
Campbell River: salmon spot
It is difficult to say whether the city of Campbell River, situated along the Discovery Passage on the east coast of the island, is best known for its surrounding scenery, its growing eco-travel tourism, its fascinating local history or its famous Salmon Festival—or for a combination of all four.
This year, from August 11 to 13, Campbell River’s Salmon Festival will include local and regional entertainers performing on the Stage of the Stars, as well as a variety of arts and crafts vendors and the North Island Logger games—widely considered to be the highlight of the weekend. Loggers from across Canada compete against each other in log-rolling, tree-falling and log-bucking.
