Powell River
Sunshine Capital of Canada
Head to the Sunshine Coast and drink in the beauty
Due to the rugged mountain terrain surrounding Powell River, the town is only accessible by ferry. Although the seclusion of Powell River makes getting there slightly more difficult, the journey is definitely worth the effort. Also referred to as the Sunshine Coast, the Powell River area has one of Canada's most summer-like climates. Supervisor for the Powell River Visitor Centre, Jenny Docking warmly embraces the nice weather and the recreation around the region.
"It is such a beautiful spot and it's so sunny," she said. "Plus, we have the Sunshine Coast Trail which is 180 kilometres long and it takes about two weeks to hike the whole thing."
Within the surrounding area of Powell River is Desolation Sound Marine Provincial Park, which is also only accessible by water or air. This protected non-developed park, with an abundance of whales, dolphins and other sea life, is locally and internationally regarded as a great area to partake in a cruise, or go kayaking or snorkeling. Enclosed by mountains, the pure blue-green water reflects the steep standing peaks. During the summer season, the water reaches ideal temperatures and becomes a popular place to go for a quick dip. Desolation Sound is among Docking's favourite places in the region and she is not alone. Celebrities such as Julie Andrews and John Wayne have also visited and enjoyed Desolation Sound.
"It was a major favourite of John Wayne," Docking said. "He came up every year just to go to Desolation Sound".
Once in Powell River, you'll notice the many flying purple banners blowing in the wind outside of art studios and galleries. Named the Cultural Capital of Canada in 2004, Powell River exudes an appealing artistic vibe and many local artists use the purple banners to welcome tourists or locals to come into their shop or studio to browse around with the option of purchasing an item.
Also, in 1995, Powell River was named a National Historic District by Parks Canada. Over 400 homes have cultural significance in Powell River and to maintain the culture of their city, the Townsite Heritage Society annually hosts competitions with the local citizens in an attempt to preserve the local heritage. One special activity is the paint-up contest, which consists of locals volunteering to renovate their homes. In turn, they have the opportunity to win enough paint, in a historical colour, to re-paint their house. Co-ordinator for the Townsite Heritage Society of Powell River, Rosemary Bgorknas said activities such as these have benefited the city.
"It fosters more community pride and community beautification," she said. "This is a desirable area because of the heritage homes. It has been an evolution along with how our society has shifted."
