As many of you already know, the British Columbia government has implemented a new law banning the use of cell phones and other hand-held electronic devices while driving a vehicle. The goal is to reduce the possibility of drivers becoming distracted, and therefore make the roads safer.

For those of you who need to have a cellphone on hand, there are ways of going about your business without having to worry about breaking the law or compromising safety in the process.

If you have a passenger with you, consider letting them take your calls. You can then focus on your driving and still be aware of anyone trying to get in touch with you, even if it is indirectly.

Consider adding a voicemail feature to your phone, so that callers can leave a message. You can check the messages and return them as soon as you are off the road.

If your phone rings and it’s safe to pull over, take an impromptu rest stop and handle the call while safely parked.

If you are unable to pull over or have the caller leave a message, consider having a hand-held device mounted in a place where it does not interfere with your line of vision. You can find a list of approved devices at www.pssg.gov.bc.ca.
