The Calgary Stampede is famous around the world, so you could be forgiven for thinking the city’s main draw is cowboy culture. However, Calgary has far more to offer in terms of the arts than just rodeos, two-stepping and pancake breakfasts—although those are always worth the trip.

The Epcor Centre for Performing Arts is located on Olympic Plaza in the heart of downtown and is recognized for the tremendous quality of its musical and theatrical productions throughout the year. Anna Blaxley, the communication co-ordinator for the Epcor Centre, said the centre will be hosting a series of musical performances this season, including the highly anticipated BD&P World Music Series. Acclaimed artists such as The Klezmatics, Dobet Gnahor and Pacifika are slated to perform this spring. As well, Theatre Calgary, Alberta Theatre Projects and One Yellow Rabbit have their home in the centre, delivering well-known dramatic classics as well as first-run Canadian plays, edgy pieces and even puppet plays.

“There is a fantastic production by the Old Trout Puppet Workshop coming up,” said Blaxley. “They are marvellous, brilliant. They’re like a troupe of Jim Hensons…most famous for their puppet death scenes.”

Yorick would be proud.
