A big part of the North’s appeal for hikers is the unique tundra. Stone Mountain Provincial Park features alpine tundra, a landscape characterized by mountains and boggy moss areas that accumulate on glacial till. You won’t see large trees when you hike in the alpine tundra, but rather scrub birch and Lapland rosebay—a shrub of the rhododendron family. In pockets of soil accumulation, grasses and alpine wildflowers eke out a ruggedly beautiful existence.
It is here that you will find mats of white dryad, a flower also known as mountain aven. This plant, which is the plant emblem of the Northwest Territories, resembles a grouping of 10-centimetre-tall windsocks when in seed. It has evolved into a very tough plant, able to withstand severe weather and raw mineral soil types.
The Inuit traditionally used the dryad as a way to keep time. When the windsock-shaped seed heads unfurled into fluffy pompoms, that signalled the time to move inland to hunt caribou—the animals’ hides would by then have achieved the right thickness to make parkas.
