A small town with big heart

Eureka offers a warm welcome and all sorts of leisure activities

A friendly atmosphere, beautiful scenery and a wealth of outdoor activities are just a few of the reasons why Eureka appeals to locals and visitors alike.

The community is situated in the Tobacco Valley, which was named for the area’s abundant tobacco crops that were grown by native Americans years ago. As Eureka lies just minutes from the Canada/U.S. port of entry at Roosville, residents are used to greeting many Canadian travellers.

“We have a lot of Canadian people coming through and we love them,” said Randy McIntyre, executive director of the Eureka Area Chamber of Commerce.
A festive community, Eureka is home to several exciting events throughout the year. The farmer’s market—which runs May through September from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays at Riverside Park—features organic produce, arts and crafts and other locally produced wares. To celebrate the salmon snagging season—which takes place when the kokanee salmon make their annual trek up the Tobacco River to spawn—Eureka is holding its 1st Annual Salmon Fest on September 20 and 21. This event will include a salmon cook-off, food vendors, fun games and more.

Eureka has a number of shops, art galleries, cafés and restaurants. For a special treat, try Jax by Night at Café Jax. This culinary affair happens in the evenings from Wednesday to Sunday and features a variety of gourmet food.

For those looking to get out and do some hiking or biking, the area surrounding Eureka offers plenty of trails to explore. Backcountry users will want to have a camera handy on their expeditions, as wildlife sightings are common.

For a more casual stroll or bike ride, visitors can check out the Eureka Riverwalk. With lush vegetation along the path and plenty of birds and animals to watch, the route provides the chance for relaxation in the beauty of nature.

Eureka is proud of its roots; some of the region’s interesting history can be discovered at the Tobacco Valley Historical Village. The site consists of several heritage buildings, including a schoolhouse, fire tower, library and log cabin, in addition to memorabilia, clothes, books and other artifacts from yesteryear.
