Dan and Lisa Goy turned their love for RVing and Mexico into a career

Dan and Lisa Goy live in Surrey, B.C., and started RVing and camping in Mexico in 1985. They loved it so much that they continued to visit the northernmost state called Baja California in Mexico and this year, they decided to start their own tour company called Baja Amigos to take RVers through Mexico.

The company offers three 28-day tours in January, February and March and one 45-day tour from November 1 to December 15. The tours all start from the U.S./Mexico border and wind through the Mexican Baja down to Cabo San Lucas and back. Dan said this tour empowers people with the knowledge to come back on their own or with a friend to tour Mexico.

“Not only do we provide them with a great experience and trip,” said Dan, “but we give them the tools they need to do it again on their own…The people that are contracting with us have their own RV and we lead them and show them the way—we make sure that they have their reservations for camping, we teach them basic Spanish if they so choose and we have a shuttle van that we use to go shopping, to markets, to visit beaches or to do a little bit of sightseeing.”

Fun has no limits

Dan said the average age of the people going on these tours is 60-plus but travellers of all ages are welcome. A benefit to travelling through Mexico with the Baja Amigos tour group is that you discover many hidden gems and you can relax—something that rarely happens when visiting a foreign place for the first time.

“You are buying a service,” said Dan, “but it includes you being relaxed. The knowledge and experience that we have empowers people.”

Dan recently graduated from the Self-Employment and Entrepreneur Development Society and has previously worked as an educator and in the tourism industry, while Lisa has experience with organizational and adventure-based camping for families. Their experience combined with their knowledge of Mexico allows them to guide people through Mexico to all of the really good spots, including the Bay of Conception, which happens to be Dan’s favourite place.

“The Bay of Conception is a real favourite for us,” said Dan. “There are 12 actual beaches that people can stay on.”
