Travelling in the Kootenays pretty much guarantees you a healthy exposure to the thriving local arts scene. From galleries to live performances, you can take your pick and sample the considerable talent these communities offer.

One new face in the Kootenay arts community is 4Cats Arts Studio, which saw the opening of its Nelson branch in February 2012. This studio has had a tremendous response, bringing artists of all ages to the creative workshops and other programs that are open to the public.

On Rossland’s main street you can check out some local artwork at the Rouge Gallery—an artist-supported facility with a selection of gorgeous pieces for your perusal.

If you’re heading to Golden, be sure to check out the Art Gallery of Golden where you can see the work of more than 80 Kootenay artists.

Performances for your pleasure

The Kootenays are also known for having quality performance art. In July, Invermere holds its famous Pynestock concert, and the Pynelogs Cultural Centre frequently hosts musical or theatrical performances.

In August, you can plan to attend the Shambhala music festival in Salmo. This explosion of musical talent and every other art form imaginable is sure to give you a taste of what the Kootenays are all about.
