Keremeos
A red-hot day of family fun
Join in the Similkameen Pepper Festival and test your spice factor
If you are in Hedley this fall and want to test your tastebuds, drive 20 kilometres south of Hedley to the annual Similkameen Sizzle Pepper Festival. The event is held in Keremeos on September 20 and will be packed full of things to do. From chili cook-offs that involve local cooks and restaurant chefs to hot pepper-eating contests, children’s games and local vendors, this will be a hot spot of activity.

Colleen Christensen, the manager of Similkameen Country, said the region is known for its diversity of peppers.
“We actually grow over a hundred different kinds of peppers in Keremeos,” she said. “This is why we have chosen the pepper festival to celebrate this particular event that happens in our community.”
There were more than 500 people in attendance at last year’s festival, and Christensen said the day’s activities are all very fun—especially the hot pepper-eating contest, otherwise called sear factor.
“We end the day with a hot pepper-eating contest,” Christensen said. “Participants have to dive into a pool of crushed tomatoes to find the peppers and then they have to eat them. It’s just a great event.”
Christensen said the Similkameen Sizzle is really a popular event, with more tourists coming every year.
“We are getting more and more tourists,” she said. “We have a great following—a lot of them come up specifically for the pepper festival.”
