If a stop in Grande Prairie hasn’t been scheduled into your upcoming travel itinerary, it needs to be. Grande Prairie is filled with a surprisingly large number of sites to visit and events to participate in. A visit to the “Swan City”—nicknamed after the endangered Trumpeter swan that nests in the area—is sure to engage both Canadian and international RVers.
Venture to Muskoseepi
A must-see in Grande Prairie for all RVers is Muskoseepi Park. This superb park, described in local surveys as the jewel of the community, allows people to enjoy the incredible number of services available within the park. Laurie Barry has lived and worked within Grande Prairie for 22 years and is currently the operations manager for Muskoseepi Park.
“We have about 20 kilometres of trails…an outdoor pool, tennis courts, a skateboard park, a boat dock, two campgrounds, a nine hole golf course, national quality ball facilities…a heritage museum, a privately run mini-golf operation (and) a lawn bowling facility. In addition to those, we have more passive types of amenities like viewing platforms to watch birds. We also stock our pond so people can fish every year, to give people a place to fish so they don’t have to drive out of town. We also maintain the pond daily in the winter and it is the only non-hockey surface in the community,” she said. As there is also an amphitheatre and pavilion, Muskoseepi Park hosts special events throughout the year.
“We encourage people to spend the night as there’s always something going on,” Barry commented.
Stop and stay a while
Grande Prairie is currently preparing to host the Olympic Torch Relay on November 6th and the 2010 Arctic Winter Games in March. The community is also taking advantage of the fossil beds in the area by investing 43 million dollars into constructing a world-class facility. This will allow people to explore the “River of Death,” the Wapiti River.
“It’s going to be a designed along a similar model as Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump, built into the river side with a series of (six or seven) floors that will expose the different beds,” explained Barry.
Festivals and more
Bird watching RVers will be thrilled to learn of the annual Grande Prairie Swan Festival, held every spring in Saskatoon Island Provincial Park and supported by the Peace Parkland Naturalists club. This well-attended event consists of “bus tours and interpretive programming on Trumpeter swans. It’s sort of an awareness and education (program),” said Barry.
The future looks bright for Grande Prairie. The city’s energy assures that both RVers passing through and residents will want to stay and witness the growth happening throughout the Swan City.
