It’s not uncommon for East Kootenay folks to head to the West Kootenay to enjoy its outstanding parks. Take Lorill Love, for instance, who is a resident of Cranbrook, B.C.: she described Kokanee Creek Provincial Park near Nelson as her “numero uno favourite.”
“We went to Kokanee Creek ever since the kids (now grown up) were little,” she said.
Getting close to nature was very much part of the experience.
“The salmon run is awesome,” Love said.
The family often camped at Kokanee Creek in late August or early September in order to see the kokanee salmon spawning. Love also recalled the delight of viewing nesting ospreys.
“When the water is low, you can walk out on never-ending sandbars,” she said.
It takes a village
The village of Nakusp, situated on the shores of Upper Arrow Lake, is also a walker’s paradise. The waterfront walkway is ideal for a stroll through lovingly maintained Japanese gardens.
In the summertime, Nakusp holds Music in the Park events every Wednesday evening at the gazebo, starting July 1.
The 12-acre park in downtown Nakusp has a municipal campground plus athletic facilities: squash and tennis courts, a skate park, a soccer field and ball fields. A beautiful public beach is close by.
A trio of champions
Also known as an ideal location for family fun is Champion Lakes Provincial Park, situated 18 kilometres northwest of Fruitvale. The park features a chain of three picturesque and peaceful lakes where only non-motorized watercraft are allowed.
There is 6.5 kilometres of multi-use trails linking the trio of lakes.
