Borrego Springs, a small community situated in the middle of California’s largest state park, boasts a college, a library and a shopping area. The community is located 90 minutes northeast of San Diego and three hours southeast of Los Angeles. Anza-Borrego Desert State Park has many attractions for the hiker, the photographer and the nature lover. The helpful, knowledgeable staff at the Borrego Springs Chamber of Commerce can advise you about the area’s attractions and events.

Tour

Among the sights to see in the vicinity of Borrego Springs is Ricardo Breceda’s one-of-a-kind Gomphotherium. Breceda is a welder and artist who has created about 130 metal sculptures depicting prehistoric and other creatures—some life-size and some larger than life—including pioneer figures. The metal creatures can be found out in the desert on property owned by the Avery family of Borrego Springs. Given that research proves that these creatures did, in fact, inhabit the area in the ancient past, this unique and imaginative art collection has the added appeal of being unexpected and just a little intimidating.

Learn

The Anza-Borrego Foundation runs a variety of outdoor programs that are educational and fun. Guided nature walks, naturalist talks and programs for children are among the free activities available.

Borrego Springs is California’s only International Dark Sky Community. A night sky tour is an unusual opportunity to observe the vastness of the star-spangled cosmos through a powerful telescope from a site with low light pollution, and learn the scientific significance of what you see.

Golf

Public golf courses include Borrego Springs Resort & Spa, Roadrunner Golf & Country Club, Springs at Borrego and Club Circle Resort. The stark contrast of the surrounding desert and mountains emphasizes the beauty and luxury offered at the golf clubs. Restaurants, shops and spa services are easily accessed at these facilities.
