Niland and the surrounding Imperial Valley have a strong agricultural background

by Glynis Fediuk

The name Niland originates from the words nile land—a reference to the potency and richness of the land. It is a fitting description; agriculture has played a major role in the heritage of Niland and the Imperial Valley. For a period of time Niland was known as the Tomato Capital of the World, and though the community is moving away from this particular aspect of its heritage, there are still many references to agriculture in nearby communities.

Carrot top of the world

Located about 45 minutes from Niland, Holtville also has a claim to world-wide fame: it is the carrot capital of the world. In addition to the popular carrot festival, Holtville also holds an annual rib cook-off, taking place in January of 2012.
