For an educational, inexpensive and fun day trip, pay a visit to the McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park in the downtown core of Scottsdale, Arizona. The creation of the park is attributed to Anne and Fowler McCormick for donating 100 acres of land to the city of Scottsdale and Guy Stillman for donating his Paradise and Pacific Railroad to the park in 1971. Today, the McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park is a main attraction for visitors to the area and is very family-friendly.
Veronica Villarico, a recreation leader at the McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park, said the park has train and carriage exhibits, a carousel and the Roald Amundsen Pullman Car, which is best known for the past American presidents who have ridden it, including Herbert Hoover, Dwight Eisenhower and Franklin Roosevelt.
“It is kind of like the Air Force One of back in the day,” said Villarico.
In addition, the McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park has a brand new historical train museum. Villarico said the information in the museum will intrigue the adults, while the train and carousel rides are perfect for children.
“We have converted an actual train depot into our train museum,” said Villarico. “It has a lot of train artifacts and historical information on trains and railroads. There is also a mini movie theatre in there and you get to see a lot of old tools that were used to work on trains.”
For those that like more action, the park also has train rides that run every half-hour on weekdays and continuously on weekends.
“(The park is) really neat and has a lot of information,” said Villarico. “It’s great for adults and children—I think the very best thing about this park is that it makes everyone happy.”
